Solar mounting systems are crucial for the proper installation and long-term performance of solar panels. Here are various solar mounting system solutions based on different requirements:

 

1. Roof - Mounted Systems

Residential Roofs

  • Asphalt Shingle Roof Mounts:

Utilize L-foot brackets that are attached to the roof rafters. Flashing, often made of aluminum or galvanized steel, is installed around the bracket penetrations to ensure the roof remains watertight. Then, aluminum or steel rails are fastened to the brackets, and solar panels are clamped onto these rails. This setup is well-suited for the sloped, uneven surface of asphalt shingle roofs and provides a stable and durable installation.

  • Tile Roof Mounts:

Tile-hook systems are key. These hooks are designed to fit discreetly under the tiles, minimizing damage to the roofing material. They can be adjusted to match different tile profiles and are then connected to either rails or directly to the panel brackets, enabling seamless integration of solar panels on tile-covered roofs.

 

Metal Roof Mounts:

  • Clamp-based: For standing seam metal roofs, non-penetrating clamps like S-5! clamps are popular. They attach firmly to the standing seams, safeguarding the roof's waterproof integrity. For corrugated metal roofs, custom brackets that conform to the corrugation pattern are used, fastened with screws or bolts.
  • Rail-based: Aluminum or steel rails are installed parallel to the metal roof's ridges or seams. Mounting brackets connect the rails to the panels, offering flexibility in panel layout and the ability to adjust tilt angles for better sunlight capture.

 

Commercial Flat Roofs

  • Ballasted Mounting:

Concrete or steel ballasts are placed on the flat roof surface. These act as weights to counteract wind uplift forces on the solar panels. Mounting racks are then attached to the ballasts, and the panels are clamped to the racks. This non-penetrating solution is ideal for maintaining the roof's waterproof condition, reducing the need for complex roofing repairs.

  • Roof-Penetrating Mounts:

Mounting feet are bolted or screwed into the roof structure. This direct attachment transfers wind loads more effectively, providing greater stability, especially in windy areas. After the feet are in place, rails and panel clamps are installed, though proper waterproofing with materials like rubber grommets and sealants around the penetrations is essential.

 

2. Ground - Mounted Systems

Fixed - Tilt Ground Mounts:

These are constructed on a concrete foundation. Steel or aluminum poles are set up on the foundation, which then support horizontal or slightly tilted rails. Solar panels are attached to the rails. Fixed - tilt systems are cost-effective and relatively simple to install. They work well in regions where the angle of the sun throughout the year doesn't vary extremely, such as near the equator, and where maximizing every bit of sunlight isn't as crucial.

Pole - Mounted Systems:

Pole-mounted setups are great for small-scale or off-grid applications. A single pole or a set of poles are installed in the ground, and the solar panel is directly attached to the top of the pole or a small frame attached to the pole. This is useful for powering remote cabins, water pumps, or small agricultural sheds, as it can be easily positioned to capture sunlight without the need for complex tracking mechanisms.
