Structure

• Mounting System: It consists of a sturdy metal rack or frame, commonly made from steel or aluminum. This framework is anchored to the ground using methods like concrete footings, helical piles, or ballasts. For fixed-tilt arrays, the panels are set at a static angle, often optimized for the local latitude to capture maximum sunlight throughout the year. In tracking arrays, there are additional mechanical components such as motors and gears that allow the panels to follow the sun's movement, either along a single axis (east-west) or two axes (east-west and north-south).
• Panel Layout: Multiple solar panels are arranged in an organized pattern, typically in rows and columns. The spacing between panels is carefully designed to prevent shading, allow for air circulation, and provide access for maintenance. The overall size of the array can range from a small installation for a single property to vast utility-scale projects covering hundreds of acres.

Function

• Electricity Generation: The PV panels absorb sunlight, which then triggers the photovoltaic effect, converting solar energy into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC power is then sent through inverters, which transform it into alternating current (AC) electricity suitable for use in homes, businesses, or for feeding into the electrical grid.
• Grid Connection: In most cases, especially for larger ground-mounted arrays, the generated AC power is connected to the local power grid. This connection allows excess electricity to be sold back to the utility company, often through net metering programs, while also enabling the array to draw power from the grid when sunlight is insufficient, such as at night or on cloudy days.
