The load-bearing capacity of helical screw foundations can vary widely based on several factors:

 

Design and Dimensions

  • Shaft Diameter and Wall Thickness: Larger-diameter and thicker-walled steel shafts generally offer more strength. A screw pile with a beefier shaft can withstand greater compressive loads. For instance, a helical pile with a 10-inch diameter shaft may carry significantly more weight compared to a 4-inch one. The wall thickness also plays a role; thicker walls resist buckling under heavy loads, which is especially crucial for taller piles or those in areas prone to lateral forces.
  • Helical Blade Configuration: The number of helical blades, their diameter, and pitch impact capacity. Multiple blades distribute the load more evenly into the soil. A larger blade diameter displaces more soil during installation, creating a broader zone of support. A proper pitch (the distance between successive turns of the helix) helps the pile penetrate the soil efficiently and also contributes to load transfer. For example, a pile with three large, well-spaced helical blades may have a higher load-bearing capacity than a single-bladed counterpart.

 

Soil Conditions

  • Soil Type: In cohesive soils like clay, helical piles rely on the shear strength of the soil around the helical blades. Clayey soils can provide good lateral support, allowing the pile to carry relatively high loads. In contrast, sandy soils have lower shear strength, but if the pile is installed deep enough to reach more compacted layers, it can still achieve a decent load-bearing capacity. Rocky soils can be challenging; however, if the helical blades can find gaps or softer seams, the pile may gain sufficient anchorage.
  • Soil Density: Denser soils, whether natural or compacted, offer more resistance to pile penetration and, once installed, better support. A helical pile driven into a well-compacted gravel layer will have a higher load-bearing capacity than one in loose, uncompacted sand.

 

Installation Depth and Torque

  • Installation Depth: Deeper installation usually means greater load-bearing capacity. As the pile is screwed further into the ground, it engages with more soil layers, distributing the load over a larger volume. In some cases, piles may be installed until they reach a more stable stratum, such as bedrock or a dense clay layer.
  • Torque during Installation: Torque is a key indicator of how well the pile is engaging with the soil. Higher torque values during installation suggest that the pile is encountering more resistance, which typically correlates with better load-bearing potential. Installers monitor torque, and once it reaches a pre-determined value based on engineering calculations, they know the pile has likely achieved the required bearing capacity.

In general, small residential helical screw piles might have a vertical load-bearing capacity in the range of 5,000 - 20,000 pounds, while larger, industrial-scale helical piles can carry hundreds of thousands of pounds, making them suitable for everything from backyard decks to large-scale wind turbine installations.
