The solar corridor crop system (SCCS) is an advanced cropping method, aiming to improve crop yields and soil quality. The details are as follows:

 

Definition: It is a system that integrates row crops with drilled or solid-seeded crops in broad strips, namely corridors. This is designed to make full use of solar radiation, with the space between rows of tall crops wide enough to allow sunlight to reach the cover crops growing between the rows.

 

Technical Characteristics: It is based on strip intercropping, growing two or more crops simultaneously in different strips across the field. It often uses wide row spacing. For instance, when planting corn, every other row can be removed to create a single-row solar corridor, or rows can be moved to form a twin-row solar corridor, which can make tall crops like corn fully exposed to sunlight.

 

System Advantages: It can improve crop productivity by enhancing the efficiency of solar radiation utilization, thus increasing crop yields. It is also beneficial for soil conservation. Management strategies such as reduced tillage, intercropping, and crop residue retention can improve soil quality, increase soil organic carbon and nitrogen content, promote effective nutrient cycling, and enhance microbial activity.
