A ballasted ground-mount solar system secures solar panels using weights.

1. Operating Principle
It relies on heavy ballasts, like concrete blocks or sand-filled containers, to counteract forces such as wind uplift. These weights are placed on the support frames, keeping the solar array stable without deep ground anchoring.

2. Key Components
Solar Panels: Convert sunlight to electricity and are arranged on the support structure.
Support Structure: Usually made of metal (aluminum or steel), it holds panels and distributes the weight of panels and ballasts.
Ballasts: Provide stability; concrete blocks are common due to their density and low cost.

3. Installation
Site Prep: Clear the area of debris and level the ground.
Structure Assembly: Assemble the metal framework on-site.
Panel Mounting: Secure panels to the framework.
Ballast Placement: Position ballasts on the structure for even weight distribution.

4. Advantages
Low Ground Disturbance: Ideal for sensitive areas as it doesn't require deep ground-anchoring.
Easy Installation: Quicker than systems with deep-foundation anchors, saving on labor and equipment.
Flexibility: Can be reconfigured or relocated more easily.

5. Things to Consider
Ground Capacity: The soil must support the combined weight of panels, structure, and ballasts. Soft soil may need a gravel base.
Wind Forces: In high-wind areas, proper calculations are needed to size ballasts for wind resistance.
