Helical piles for decks are innovative and practical foundation solutions that have gained significant popularity in deck construction.
1. Structure
- A helical pile consists of a central steel shaft, often made from high-strength steel. Wound around this shaft are one or more helical blades, which are typically thick, metal plates formed into a spiral shape. These blades are what give the pile its name. The tip of the pile may be pointed to ease penetration into the ground. At the top, there's a connection device, such as a plate or bracket, designed to attach the deck structure firmly. This connection point ensures that the load from the deck is evenly transferred to the pile.
2. Installation Process
- Installation is relatively quick and straightforward. Specialized equipment, like a hydraulic torque motor, is used to rotate the helical pile into the ground. As the pile spins, the helical blades cut through the soil, displacing it in a spiral path. This method doesn't require extensive excavation, which is a major plus. Depending on the soil type – whether it's soft loam, sandy, or even slightly clayey – the installer can adjust the torque settings. Looser soils may need less torque, while denser soils require more power to drive the pile to the appropriate depth.
3. Advantages
- Adaptability to Different Soils: Helical piles can be installed in a wide variety of soil conditions. They perform well in soft soils where traditional concrete footings might sink or shift over time. In sandy soils, the helical design helps in achieving good grip, and in clay, they can still penetrate and provide stable support.
- Speed of Installation: Compared to pouring concrete footings, which have curing times and complex formwork requirements, helical piles can be installed rapidly. A small crew can install multiple piles in a day, significantly reducing the overall deck construction time.
- Minimal Site Disruption: Since there's no need for large-scale excavation, there's less disruption to the existing landscape. This is ideal for homeowners who don't want their yards dug up extensively, preserving the integrity of lawns, gardens, and existing vegetation.
- Load-Bearing Capacity: These piles offer substantial load-bearing capabilities. They can support the weight of large, multi-level decks, as well as withstand lateral forces from wind or people moving on the deck. The helical blades distribute the load effectively throughout the soil, enhancing stability.
- Durability: Usually made of galvanized or corrosion-resistant steel, helical piles are built to last. They can withstand exposure to moisture, rain, snow, and even the corrosive effects of soil chemicals, ensuring a long lifespan for the deck they support.
- Adjustability: If during the installation process, the initial depth isn't quite right or the pile needs to be realigned slightly, helical piles allow for some adjustment. This flexibility is not as easily achievable with traditional concrete foundations.
