A ground mount racking system is a structure used to support solar panels on the ground. Here are its key components and features:
Components
Bases and Foundations
- For stable installation, ground mount racking systems start with proper bases. In areas with firm soil, simple concrete footings or ground screws can be used. Ground screws are helical piles that are screwed into the ground, offering a quick and relatively less invasive installation method. In softer or more unstable soils, deeper concrete foundations may be required to prevent the system from shifting, especially in windy conditions.
Mounting Posts or Rails
- These form the vertical and horizontal framework of the racking system. Mounting posts, often made of galvanized steel, are driven or anchored into the ground at regular intervals. Rails, which are also typically steel, connect the posts horizontally. They provide a flat, level surface on which the solar panels can be attached. The height of the posts can be adjusted in some racking systems, allowing for better air circulation beneath the panels or to adapt to uneven terrain.
Panel Clamps and Fasteners
- These are used to securely attach the solar panels to the rails. Clamps are designed to fit the edges of the panels precisely, ensuring they don't shift or vibrate. Stainless steel fasteners are commonly used because they are resistant to corrosion, which is crucial, given that the system is exposed to the elements.
Types
Fixed Tilt Ground Mounts
- This is the most basic and common type. The panels are set at a fixed angle, which is usually determined based on the local latitude. For instance, in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, a tilt angle between 30° and 45° often maximizes annual sunlight capture. It's simple, cost-effective, and suitable for large-scale solar farms where the focus is on straightforward, reliable installation.
Adjustable Tilt Ground Mounts
- As the name implies, these systems allow the tilt angle of the panels to be changed. This can be adjusted seasonally to account for the varying position of the sun throughout the year. Some adjustable mounts are manually adjusted a few times a year, while more advanced models come with motorized actuators that can be programmed to shift the panels' tilt based on the time of day or season, optimizing energy production.
Single-Axis Tracking Ground Mounts
- These mounts enable the solar panels to pivot on a single axis, typically following the east-to-west movement of the sun during the day. By constantly orienting the panels perpendicular to the sun's rays, they can capture more sunlight compared to fixed-tilt systems, leading to increased energy output. However, they are more complex and expensive due to the additional mechanical components and control systems.
Multi-Axis Tracking Ground Mounts
- The most advanced type, multi-axis tracking ground mounts can adjust the panels in multiple directions, both horizontally and vertically. This allows for the most precise alignment with the sun at all times, maximizing sunlight absorption. But they are also the costliest option, with higher installation, maintenance, and component costs.
Advantages
Optimized Sunlight Capture
- Depending on the type of ground mount racking system, it can be configured to get the best possible exposure to sunlight. Tracking systems, in particular, can significantly boost energy production by following the sun's path.
Easy Maintenance
- Since the panels are at ground level, technicians can easily access them for cleaning, inspection, and repair. There's no need for specialized rooftop access equipment, reducing maintenance time and costs.
Scalability
- Ground mount racking systems are highly scalable. It's simple to add more panels or expand the system, making them ideal for growing energy demands, whether for a small residential installation or a massive utility-scale solar project.
