Fixed tilt solar structures come in several types, each with its own set of advantages and suitable applications:
1. Standard Fixed-Tilt Racks
- Design: These are the most common type, consisting of a simple metal frame made of steel or aluminum. The frame has legs that are anchored to the ground, and crossbars to which the solar panels are bolted. The tilt angle is set during installation and remains constant. For example, in a small residential solar setup, standard racks might be used to install a few panels in the backyard. They are often modular, allowing for easy expansion if more panels are added in the future.
- Advantages: Their simplicity makes them relatively inexpensive, both in terms of the cost of the rack itself and the installation labor. With fewer moving parts, there is less potential for mechanical failures, leading to reduced maintenance requirements over time.
2. Ballasted Fixed-Tilt Systems
- Design: Instead of being anchored into the ground with posts or piles, these systems rely on weights, known as ballasts, to keep the solar panels in place. The ballasts are typically large concrete blocks or metal weights placed strategically around the base of the panel structure. This type of structure is well-suited for flat rooftops or areas where ground penetration is restricted, like on some commercial buildings with sensitive roofing membranes.
- Advantages: They avoid the need for drilling or penetrating the ground or roof, which can be a major advantage in preserving the integrity of the underlying surface. Installation can be quicker since there's no need for complex groundwork, and they can be repositioned more easily if required.
3. Pole-Mounted Fixed-Tilt Structures
- Design: Solar panels are mounted on poles, which are then driven into the ground. The height of the poles can vary depending on the application, from a few feet to several yards. This setup is often used in areas where space is limited on the ground, such as small residential lots or in agricultural fields where ground-mounted racks might interfere with farming activities.
- Advantages: Pole-mounted structures can elevate the panels, providing better air circulation around them, which helps in cooling the panels and potentially improving their efficiency. They also offer more flexibility in terms of positioning, as they can be placed in areas where traditional ground-mounted racks would not fit.
4. Cantilevered Fixed-Tilt Racks
- Design: These racks have a unique design where one end of the panel support structure is anchored, while the other end extends outwards, creating a "cantilever" effect. This is useful when the solar installation needs to cover an irregularly shaped area or when there are obstacles in the immediate vicinity, like a building corner or a drainage ditch.
- Advantages: Cantilevered racks offer greater adaptability in site layout. They can be designed to reach over areas that would otherwise be inaccessible to standard racks, maximizing the use of available space for solar panel installation.
